What is the legal way to play the original on a modern console?
Is there an official PC version?
No. Nintendo announced the remake for Nintendo Switch 2 only, and it launches on November 5, 2026. There is no PC, Steam, Xbox or PlayStation version, and Nintendo has not said one is planned. Nintendo has also not named the studio or the engine. Digital Foundry says the footage does not look like Unreal Engine 5.
If you search for “Ocarina of Time remake PC”, you will find two different fan projects. They are explained below.
What is the Unreal Engine 5 “Ocarina of Time remake”?
This is a fan remake by the artist CryZENx, built in Unreal Engine 5 over about ten years. It recreates the start of the game with modern lighting and textures: Kokiri Forest, the Deku Tree, Hyrule Field, Lon Lon Ranch and Hyrule Castle Town. You can explore, fight enemies and solve puzzles in those areas.
In June 2026, CryZENx stopped work on it because Nintendo’s official remake was coming. In July 2026 the final builds were released for free, with more than five hours of play. It is not a full game: the story stops early, and no other areas will be added.
What is Ship of Harkinian?
Ship of Harkinian is a native PC port of the original Ocarina of Time by the fan group Harbour Masters. It is built on the Ocarina of Time decompilation project, which rebuilt the game’s code by hand. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux without an emulator.
On top of the original game it adds:
- widescreen, higher resolutions and higher frame rates
- custom controls and a full settings menu
- support for HD texture packs and mods
- a built-in randomizer
- Master Quest, if your copy includes it
The download contains no Nintendo data. On first launch it asks for a ROM dumped from your own copy of the game. It supports the N64 versions (US and Japanese 1.0 to 1.2, European 1.0 and 1.1) and the GameCube releases, including Master Quest.
How do the options compare?
| Switch 2 remake | UE5 fan remake | Ship of Harkinian | N64 on Switch Online | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Made by | Nintendo | CryZENx (fan) | Harbour Masters (fans) | Nintendo |
| Runs on | Switch 2 | PC | PC, Mac, Linux | Switch, Switch 2 |
| Full game | Yes | No, early areas only | Yes | Yes |
| New content | Voiced scenes, jump, Threads of Time | New graphics only | Quality-of-life options | None |
| What you need | The game ($59.99 digital) | A PC | A ROM from your own copy | Switch Online + Expansion Pack |
Which one should you play?
For the new story scenes, voice acting, jumping and the other remake changes, the only option is the Switch 2 remake. See where to buy it for prices and editions.
If you want to replay the original before November 5, the Nintendo Switch Online version is the simplest legal route. Our story recap refreshes the plot if you don’t have time to replay, and everything we know collects the remake’s confirmed details.
